Badminton

Uphill Badminton Club was founded in February 1978. Village residents Ben Allison and Jim Brown obtained permission to adjust lights and paint lines in the Victory Hall.

In the beginning the club consisted of only 16 members, all being residents of Uphill or Bleadon. The first tournament was played in May 1978. The trophy for the occasion being presented to the club by Reg Day, and thereafter known as the 'Slimeridge Trophy'.

In September 1978 the first club committee was elected and the membership raised to 25. It was decided to enter a team in the North Somerset Badminton league ninth division. The 'A' team duly won promotion and a second team was entered in the league.

The strength of the club continued and the 'A' team progressed successfully every year, finally reaching the 3rd division. In 1985 Uphill B.C. officially moved its venue to the Weston Cricket Club when two national standard courts were built. Around 20% of the members voted to stay in the Victory Hall, and those that remained became known as Uphill Village B.C. After the move the club went from strength to strength.

Junior Section Based at Wyvern School/Cricket Club

Uphill Badminton Club Junior Section coaches some 80 children aged between 5-18 years. Some of the juniors already play in Senior Club Teams.

The Junior Club coaching sessions are led by a Badminton England qualified Coach with support from several other Badminton England qualified coaches and assistants all giving unpaid voluntary coaching.

The aim is to progress the children from beginners through to Club and County players. It has been particularly successful in providing Avon Badminton Association with players for their U/13, U/15 and U/17 county teams. The junior club also enters two teams in both the U/15 and U/18 Avon Schools Badminton Leagues and has won them more times than any other Club.

The end of the season tournament is fun for all the members, with trophies presented by representatives of local organisations. The juniors are members of the Avon Schools Badminton Association. The Club has received funding for equipment from the Sports Council and North Somerset Council for the venue. Finally, the success of the junior badminton development is epitomised by the fact that the present Senior Club Captain has come through our junior coaching system and many juniors are now senior members.
