A (very) Potted History

The Club was established in 1893. A friendly and sociable team, the Club survived for over ninety years by providing cricket for two adult teams on a Saturday and one team on a Sunday.

The late 1970's saw a change in direction for the Club. The introduction of several new and influential members saw an upturn in the Club's success, both on and off the field. The 1st XI made steady progress through a number of Divisions of the Somerset Cricket League, finally entering the Premier Division where Uphill enjoyed a fair amount of success. This included one third place finish and one season which saw the Club become the Runners Up in the Somerset County K.O Cup.

Following several successful seasons the Club moved into the highly competitive Alliance Cricket League, which embraced teams from across three Counties. In only their second season, Uphill finished as Runners Up of the Alliance League.

Within this highly successful period the Club also reached the Semi Finals of the National Village Cricket Championship, where they lost by just six runs, thus missing out narrowly on a place in the Final at Lords.

This success has been a catalyst for the Club and now four teams are regularly fielded on a Saturday, together with one team on a Sunday. There is a thriving Youth set up with both the Under 15 and Under 17 teams winning titles in Season 2001.

All in all on the field the Club is going from strength to strength and to supplement this over the past two years a great deal of hard work by many Club members has culminated in a splendid new Clubhouse for Uphill Castle. This building now offers a fully licensed bar, which has never been available before and has brought much needed financial stability to the Cricket Club.

Uphill Castle has never forgotten its roots and is still regarded by friend and (cricket) foe alike as a friendly and affable Club. There is now a capacity for the Club to attract new social members and there is a full programme of events being planned for the forthcoming season.

If there are any questions over membership please call the either the Clubhouse on 01934 429763,
or email Tim Holt (Secretary).
