Education

Uphill was originally served by a school situated opposite the new church in Uphill Road South and thought to be from the late 18th century.

In 1872 the Knyfton family, whose coat of arms still adorns the original masters house now the school office, established what is now the Primary School in Old Church Road as a church school for 150 pupils.

The earliest surviving records of the school show an average attendance of 107 and an income of £91.17s.16d.

During the 2nd World War the school took in evacuees from London and the school population continued to grow requiring additional classrooms to be added with a purpose built infant block being added in 1986.

1997 saw the 125th birthday of the school with special celebrations and the publication of its own commemorative book.
