Pubs

During the 18th and 19th century the two public houses in Uphill were the favourite haunts of smugglers who often lit lanterns on the hill to guide boats back.

The Ship is the older of the two and has been a pub for over 250 years although it has changes its name several times. It dates back to 1713, when it was called "The Crowne", by 1751 it was "The Lamb" but by 1799 it was "The Ship". It was also the venue for the Uphill revel that took place every summer in the road outside. Stalls and sideshows and dancing in the street until midnight. Rides around the village provided by James Exon of Uphill farm who also trained a flute and fife band from the local men to march around the village much to the amusement of residents.

Dolphin

The Dolphin began life in at least 1720 at the east end of Ynyshire Terrace when it was called "West Inn".

Following a fire in 1860 the licence was transferred to two cottages where it now stands.

'ere, what time do you open??!As the Dolphin rarely advertises (only on this web site, the Village Society magazine and the odd charity programme) what better way to find out what's on there than to pay it a visit!

Here's someone who seems to have been waiting for the doors to open for a long time:
