Recreation and Sport

Uphill has always been able to find ways of entertaining itself and taking recreation from Golf to Cricket and sand-yachting on the beach.

Facilities are sadly limited within the village itself and at present the Village Society and Primary School are carrying out a feasibility study as to the possibility of a joint bid for Lottery Funding to provide improved community sports facilities within the school grounds.

As to the past:

The Western Mercury & Somerset Herald of 9th July 1892 reported a meeting at the Grand Atlantic Hotel for the purpose of considering the ways and means of making "the popular game of golf a supplemental attraction for visitors to Weston-super-Mare". So Weston Golf Club was formed to be officially opened on the 24th September 1892 in the shadow of the Old Church on the Hill on land leased from the Graves-Knyfton estate.

Until 1893 cricket at Uphill was played by a team known as the Boulevard Club made up mainly of male staff from Uphill Manor but in that year villagers joined the team which became properly representative of the whole village and changed its name to Uphill Castle Cricket Club.

After a number of moves the clubs ground finally became established on its present site with Major Graves-Knyfton as its President. Following his death his daughter Miss Edith Marjorie Graves-Knyfton was unanimously elected into the office a post she filled for a remarkable 72 years until her death in 1992.
