Art room A positive choice
Westhaven School is a purpose built school for pupils aged from 7-16 years with a wide variety of barriers to their learning. Situated in Uphill village to the south of Weston-super-Mare, the school caters currently for approximately 75 pupils, all of whom have a Statement of Special Educational Needs.
Built in the late 1960s the school has two general classrooms in the main building plus five mobile classrooms, one of which is a Science laboratory. There is also a new Computer room, Art room, Resistant Materials Workshop, Food Technology room, Common room, Music room, indoor games area, Hall and Library, plus additional rooms used for life and social skills, as well as the administrative offices.
There is a large playgroundto the rear of the school which also has an adventure playground. For summer use there is a recently re-furbished outdoor swimming pool. The caretaker lives on site, in a house adjacent to the school. Westhaven School enjoys a very positive relationship with the Inclusion Support Service (South), which is based in adjoining buildings on the same site.
What are we setting out to achieve for our pupils?
At Westhaven School our purpose is to ensure that all our pupils receive an education that is appropriate for their individual needs so that they may increase in self-esteem, develop to their full potential and emerge to become valued members of their community. Our pupils are those for whom the mainstream school may be inappropriate for all or part of their education. We seek to offer therefore, a broad and rigorous curriculum based on the National Curriculum, which is modified to meet pupil needs and supported by Individual Education Plans. All pupils are entered for a range of external examinations including the Certificate of Educational Achievement and GCSE.
We provide high levels of pupil support in small groups and offer flexible placements in partnership with mainstream schools. We aim to ensure that all pupils additionally enjoy a wide variety of interesting and challenging experiences, including residential visits. We shall always provide a high quality of education, which will enable our pupils to achieve success in learning beyond their original expectations and will be valued by the pupil, their parents and the local community.
