Badminton

Uphill Badminton Club was the brainchild of Ben Allison, an ex Earl of Scotland player, at the time residing in Moseley Grove, Uphill. Together with Jim Brown, the then Treasurer of the Victory Hall, the Village Hall Committee was approached and permission obtained to adjust the lights and paint in the lines for the badminton court. Uphill Badminton Club was born in February 1978. In the beginning the club consisted of 16 members, all being residents of Uphill or Bleadon (small villages outside Weston-super-Mare).

In 1985 the Weston-super-Mare Cricket Club had two national standard badminton courts built, and a motion was made to move the club to the new venue. Around 20% of the members voted to stay at the Victory Hall. Uphill Badminton Club officially moved its venue to the Cricket Club and those remaining became known as Uphill Village Badminton Club

Weston-super-Mare Golf club

The club has around 600 members in total across all sections, and of these about 40 are Category One players, which speaks volumes about the standard of player the course attracts. At 6231 yards, it is not a long course, however, it does offer a challenging test of golf, requiring accurate shots in order to score well. Thanks to its excellent drainage, the course is rarely closed due to rain, temporary greens are also seldom used unless there's an early morning frost.

Weston Bay Yacht club

Our clubhouse is on the beach at Uphill, go onto the beach and turn left and after about four hundred yards you will come to a wooden building on concrete piers – that’s us!

We moved to Uphill a few years ago after amalgamating with the former Uphill Sailing Club which itself took over from the old Pegasus Sailing Club. We were formed at Knightstone in 1932 where we first had the little green hut alongside the Fox Building and subsequently moved into the first floor of the Baths. We stayed there until we had to leave to enable the current development to take place.

During summer months a full programme of sailing events is arranged and in winter training courses approved by the Royal Yachting Association take place.

We hold a lease on the River Axe from the Environmental Agency and so control moorings from the fence near the clubhouse to the Brean Road Sluice. These moorings are for the benefit of club members only. Uphill Pill is not under our control. Winter lay-up of boats is either at the boatyard or on the wharf where mains water and electricity are available to members.

Membership is open to anyone who is interested in sailing or boating. Our clubhouse has a bar, kitchen, toilets and a large room for social events. Friday night is club night and if you want to join us, just come along.
